Jake was born Jarig Dijkstra in August 1895 in the former village of Huizum, Leeuwarden, province Friesland. Son of Jarig Dijkstra (38 years old, cart maker [wagenmaker] and Augustina Geertruida Visser.

In Huizum were also his following siblings born:
* Tietje, June 11, 1889, died February 1, 1956 in Leeuwarden;
* his brother Hendrik Dijkstra
* Dieuwke, February 1, 1893;
* Jelke Dijkstra, March 24, 1897, died June 1, 1980 in Leeuwarden.
* Jake had also six half brothers and sisters in Huizum: Jannigje, Tsjiegje, Dirkje, Otte, Dirk and Uilkje.

On April 9, 1914 Jarig Dijkstra arrived without any relative on the S.S. Ryndam at the port of New York, Ellis Island. His last residence place in the Netherlands was Huizum. On June 5, 1917 Jake Dykstra (22 years old, single, employed farmer by Peter Zylstra) was living in or near the city of Sibley, the seat of Osceola County, Iowa, when he was administrated on a WW I Draft Registration Card. He was tall and slender, had blue eyes and brown hair.

On February 12, 1920 Jake married the one year older Sadie De Haan, who immigrated in 1918, in Sibley. Witnesses: Peter Zylstra and Henry Dykstra [very probably his brother]. On November 20, 1920 their daughter Sadie was born in Grand Township, Iowa. On January 12, 1923 their son Jerry J. Dykstra was born in Brookings County, Dakota. On June 28, 1925 their son Henry Dykstra was born in the small city of White in Brookings County, South Dakota.

In 1925 Jake Dykstra was living with his wife Sade Der Haan in South Dakota. In April 1930 Jake Dykstra (35, farmer), his wife Sadie (36 years old), their children Sadie (9, Iowa), Jerry (7, South Dakota) and Henry (4, South Dakota) were living in Argo Township, Brookings County, outh Dakota. In April 1940 Jake Dykstra (45, house painter), his wife Sadie (46), and their sons Jerry (17) and Henry (15) were living in their own house, worth $1200, in (again) Sibley. They lived in 1935 in the samehouse. On 27 April 1942 the 47 years old self employed painter Jake Dykstra was living at 1006 9th Avenue, Sibley, when he was administrated on a WW II Registration Card. He had a light complexion, blue eyes and brown hair.

In December 1983 his wife Sadie died at the age of 89 years in Sibley, Osceola County, Iowa. Widower Jake Dykstra died in December 1989 at the age of 94 years in Mower County, Minnesota.
