"Clarence attended school through 8th grade. When a young man, he went to Rocky Ford, Colorado to live and work with the Rarrick family in a ranching operation. Clarence was drafted into the Army during World War I, serving in an artillery unit. His unit shipped over to France, but avoided front line action due to the Armistice being signed just as the unit was being ordered to the front. Following discharge from the Army, Clarence returned to Lily. Alma attended rural school, graduating in 1917. She clerked in a grocery store in Lily just prior to her marriage. Following marriage, the couple took up farming. They first farmed 2 miles west and 2 miles south of Lily and later moved to a rented 320-acre farm 1½ miles southwest of Lily. All of their eight children were born on these two farms. During the Depression Era in the 1930's, Clarence worked for the WPA doing road work with a team of horses and wagon hauling gravel. In 1945 Clarence and Alma purchased a large two-story house in Lily and moved off the farm. Alma took in boarders: local bachelors, schoolteachers, and, sometimes, a young married couple just getting started. In the late 1940's Clarence became janitor of the Lily school, holding that job until the school closed in the mid-1950's. After their retirement, Clarence and Alma spent summers in Lily and most winters in California with their daughters. They celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 1969 at the Lily Lutheran Church with all of their children present. Both Alma and Clarence are buried in the CORBIN family plot at Prairie Hill Cemetery, Bradley, SD."
