Notes about Alma Allora Emile Fehrs

CORBIN, F. S., "History and Genealogy of the Descendant Families of Miron S. and Kathrine E. CORBIN," p. 44
"She was born Mar 12,1900 near Hartford, SD to Henry G. and Wilhemine Louise Emile (Schroeder) Fehrs. Alma’s mother, Wilhemine (Minnie), was born April 1, 1882 and died April 25, 1901, at age 19, from complications following the birth of her second child, Herman Fehrs, a few days earlier. Alma and her brother, Herman, were raised by different family members until their father remarried. Her family being all German immigrants, Alma spoke only German until starting school. Henry Fehrs married a widow, Clara Collins, May 24, 1910, who brought two girls and two boys from her previous marriage: Marion, Rose, Oliver, and Ray. The family farmed near Bradley, SD. Clara died June 9, 1939 at age 56. Henry Fehrs died in 1968 at age 94.

Alma attended the rural Cottonwood School, graduating in 1917. She clerked in a grocery store in Lily just prior to her marriage. When Clarence was courting Alma in a horse and buggy, they were chaperoned by her step-mother Clara.

Following marriage, the couple took up farming. They first farmed 2 miles west and 2 miles south of Lily (now called the Nash Farm) and later moved to a rented 320-acre farm 1½ miles southwest of Lily. All of their eight children were born on these two farms. During the Depression Era in the 1930’s, Clarence worked for the WPA doing road work with a team of horses and wagon hauling gravel. It was a time of drought and hard times for all, but the family endured the hardships. Alma was a good seamstress and an excellent manager."
