Notes about Bessie Lucille Corbin

Lavon CORBIN Notes:
"Bessie had olive skin with dark brown hair and brown eyes. As a child she would reach into the cash register and get money. The other children, did not get that privilege. Her Dad loved her very much. She was one of his favorites.

Bessie was deserted by her husband. She had five children to raise on her own. She had to be on welfare. She remained on welfare the rest of her life. Bessie would buy and sell used clothing and a means to earn extra money.

Her home was left to her and her siblings. They all agreed to deed it over to her, in lieu of receiving $500.00 a piece, since she was on welfare they felt sorry for her. Bessie lived her whole life in Sterling, Logan County, Colorado. She never drove or worked outside the home. She had some medical problems, swelling of the legs. She was only three blocks from town, so there was not much need for a car.

She lived at Jesse's (her father) home at 323 Douglas Street, Sterling, Logan County, Colorado. When he died, he had willed his half of the house to Bessie. Then, Minnie, her mother, deeded her half of the house to Bessie, where Bessie lived the remainder of her life.

She died February 5, 1995, Sterling, Logan County, Colorado.
She had six children, 17 grandchildren, and 30 great-grandchildren. She was buried February 8, 1995 at Riverside Cemetery. K178-K80-806D Silver Rose.

Jesse, her dad and Clarence, her brother lived with her the last years of their lives. Clarence was crippled with spinal bifida (per Gary Everett), but we don't know for sure. He was born that way. His mind was good, just his body was crippled. She had quite a job with one crippled man and her father, who was quite a character. (according to Gary Everett, his grandson).

BESSIE CORBIN EVERETT
"I grew up at Kelly, I had a wonderful childhood. I came to Kelly when I was three years old and went to school in the first grad in an old sod house that was the last term for the schoolhouse and the first term for me. The schoolhouse was torn down and a frame schoolhouse was built. Hazel Hetrick taught that first term at the new schoolhouse. I also had Carrie Myers for a teacher. Both ladies had lived in the Kelly area. Mrs. Myers kept her horse and buggy at my parents place while she was teaching. She lived a few miles from Kelly. My brother Arthur CORBIN and I were on the move constantly hitching up the horse and buggy. We would drive all around the countryside. We both loved horses, he younger thank I, he did a lot of trapping, mostly for skunks. He hunted pheasants a lot also. I went with him part of the time. We had our jobs and they came first. We both enjoyed washing, we never had to be told twice to do anything, as we had a very strict dad. I gave lots of dances in the dance hall north of the store, we had large crowds. They were invitation dances, we couldn't call them public dances, that wasn't allowed. I swept the dance halls, filled 10 lamps with kerosene and washed lamp chimneys. The lamps had silver color crimped fan like reflectors on the back of them which threw the light to the center of the dance hall. Katherine Wolf a little girl friend of mine, a year younger than I would always come to our dances every two weeks.

We had great times and I had a wonderful childhood. After Bessie grew to womanhood she married Cecil R. Hetrick. He worked at the Glen Ellen dairy in Merino. Their first son Elwyn was born there and he now lives in Golden. Delores was born a year and a half later. Bessie later married again and had four more children. Marie Ehmche, Harold who spent 20 years in the Air Force lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico and he is a twin to Gary who lives in Sterling, owner of Gary's Barber Shop. Marvin is a Director of the Welfare Department and lives in Burlington.

Preceded her in death by a son, Harold.
Bessie grew up in Kelly area. She had been a resident of Sterling for over 50 years."

Email from Lisa Beck, granddaughter of Bessie CORBIN on July 16, 2004 to Joan Marlene Hamilton

Dear Joanie,
Thank you so much for the family history. I didn't read it all since it's getting pretty late. I would love to tell you (it may be in the writing) about Grandma Bess's gift of healing. You probably already know but Grandma was a Powerful prayer warrior. I know that my still being here has a strong testimony to her strength and faith. I will tell you about it sometime. I've shared it with many people over the years and it never fails to bring a very strong spiritual "knowing" to everyone I have told.

Thank you again for the prayers, I cannot tell you how much that means to me. I've been out of work for the most part of a year but things always work out and I don't stop believing in miracles. Won't do it, it's not in me...

Have a wonderful day and I am so happy to be getting to know you.
Love,
Lisa
