2 CONC Hij huwde in 1162 met Ada, zuster van de Schotse koning. Hij waseen getrouw partijganger van Frederik Barbarossa, die hij bij diensstrijd in
2 CONC Italië terzijde stond (1176); als dank verwierf hij de titelvan rijksvorst en, vermoedelijk in 1179, de tol van Geervliet. Hij
2 CONC stierftijdens de Derde Kruistocht. Binnenslands streed Floris tegen deWestfriezen. Hij volgde de uitspraak van de keizer in een geschil met
2 CONC debisschop van Utrecht, o.a. over de afdamming van de Rijn bij
2 CONC Zwammerdamen over verdeling van de gezagsrechten in Friesland (1165).
2 CONC OverZeeland-bewesten-Schelde geraakte hij in strijd met de Vlaamse graafFilips van de Elzas. Hij moest het Verdrag van Brugge (1167) toestaan.Hij was
2 CONC de eerste Hollandse graaf die geld sloeg.

Floris III, Count of Holland 1157-1190, born circa 1140, died 1 August1190 in
2 CONC Antiochia, son of Dirk VI and Sophia von Rheineck; in 1162 hemarried Aleida of Scotland and they became the parents of eleven
2 CONC children.In 1161 he made peace with the West-Friesians. In a struggle over Zeelandhe
2 CONC became imprisoned in Flanders in 1167. In 1176 he supported EmperorFriedrich Barbarossa in the battle of Legnano, for which he received animperial
2 CONC toll-post at Geervliet. In 1180 he restrained the West-Friesiansand participated, in 1189, in the third crusade which brought him toAntiochia
2 CONC where he died.
