De Reguliere Derde Orde

Een groot aantal mensen 'in de wereld' wilden Franciscus ook volgen. Hij stelde toen een aantal richtlijnen voor hen op. Het was een leefregel voor de broeders en zusters van de boetvaardigheid, die in hun eigen huizen wonen. Dit werd de derde orde. In 1289 stelde paus Nicolaas IV een uitgebreidere regel voor hen op, die een wat meer kloosterachtig karakter had. Naar de beginwoorden heet deze regel 'Supra Montem'.
De broeders en zusters van de boetvaardigheid vielen aldra in twee takken uiteen: de franciscaanse lekenorde of orde van franciscaanse seculieren en de reguliere derde orde.
Al spoedig gingen Derde Ordelingen - vooral vrouwen - namelijk ook zelfstandige gemeenschappen vormen en daarin een kloosterlijk en caritatief leven leiden.
