Les,

Sorry for the delay in answering your e-mail. According to my information, your ancestor, Mary Ann DeLay, was the daughter of William DeLay, b 27 Dec 1787, in then Fayette now Bourbon County, KY; m 24 Jan 1811, Ross County, OH; d 4 Feb 1852 in Vermilion Co, IL. Wife: Susan (Susannah) Peters, b. ca 1792 in NC, d 23 Mar 1857 in Vermilion Co., buried in Lamb Cemetery, Vermilion, probably beside her husband.

William in turn was the son of Henry DeLay b 1749 in Virginia, d 1808/11 in Ross County, OH. Henry and his wife, probably named Elizabeth, had at least 10 children, the third of which was James DeLay and the seventh your William.

James, my 2nd great-grandfather, married Mary (Polly) Boardman, and died in Vermilion County. James had at least eight children, one of which was Jeremiah DeLay, who married Melinda Cannady and had five children, and then, after her death, married Rachel Alice Smith and had five more. Jeremiah's oldest child, Harriet DeLay (by Melinda), was my great-grandmother, while his next to youngest daughter, Mary Alice DeLay (by Rachel), was my grandmother. Too convoluted to explain by e-mail.

Other than my direct descent, the information I have given you comes from The DeLay Family History (1680-1983) by Sam and Zell DeLay. The book is a compilation of a lot of records submitted over many years by many people. I find it unreliable unless substantiated from other sources. Example: Jeremiah's family of ten children becomes, in the book, a family of 15 children with one of them Jeremiah's second wife. However, it IS one place to start.

I have been collecting DeLay data for many years. I'll be glad to share the things that interest you. And if you have your line going back to Mary Ann I would appreciate receiving it.

Hope to hear from you.

Not sure this is him, but ...
"The first newspaper was started in the county in 1832. William Delay is
said to have been its editor at that time. Whether his term of editorship came at so early a date is but a matter of memory and, should the date be an error, there is no doubt that he was editor of it at a very early period in its
history. William Delay was a man typical of the times. With sympathy all with
the southern states and the institution of that section, he looked forward to
that institution being extended into the territories, and even had a hope that
Illinois should become a slave state and to that end put forth every influence.
He was courageous and reckless, a man of strong will and ready effort. His
brother was of the same stamp, and together they joined the Mounted Rangers and took part in the Black Hawk war, serving in protecting the section about their camp in Vermilion County after the war was ended. In 1845 Mr. Delay moved to Oxford, Miss., where he became a leader in political affairs. He was sent as a delegate to the Charleston convention in 1860. He was a shrewd politician, and understood the conditions in the country; it is said that upon his return he predicted the downfall of his party and the election of Abraham Lincoln as President of the United States, and also the following Civil War. Mr. Delay afterward became captain of a company in one of the regiments of the Confederate army." History of Vermillion County Illinois -- Chapter XVII
