Sam attended Oregon State college and graduated in Civil Engineering in 1906. he worked for the Southern Pacific Railway Company in California for six years after which he engaged in location of Railroads, logging roads and canals for a large lumber company at Susanville, California. He attended a Reserve Officers Training School in 1917 and was commmissioned a First Lieutenant of Engineers. he was assigned to Second Division Engineers and served in France thru World War I. Then afterward, with the Reparations Commission which was to rebuild the territory over which the Americans had fought. On return to the US, he took a permanent appointment with Corps of Engineers of the US Army. He served with several Engineer Districts in the US, three years as District Engineer in Hawaii and a tour with the District Engineer at Portland, Oregon. Impaired health forced his retirement in 1940. Sam and Myrtle Wood were married at Portland, Oregon and they lived in a beautifully kept and arranged beach home at Lincoln Beach on the coase. Sam and Irene had one child together, a girl.
