'Leroy and Cheri Johnke Family
Leroy and Cheri Johnke moved to Lincoln County in the summer of 1979 along with their three sons, Erich, Andrew, and Barton. They built their home in Section 19 of Brooklyn Township on a tract of land previously owned by Leroy'sgrandfather, Monte Frinkman.
Leroy served in the U.S. Navy 1968-72 and since then worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, serving as Director of Lincoln County ASCS beginning in 1979. In addition to home and mother responsibilities, Cheri worked as a caseworker for South Dakota Department of Family Services and as a school guidance counselor. Beginning in 1980 the family also operated a small corn and soybean farm in Brooklyn Township. Leroy served as a member of the Centerville SchoolDistrict Board of Education beginning in 1981. Leroy and Cheri are affiliated with the Fecerated United Church of Christ in Centerville. Before moving to Lincoln County, the Leroy Johnkes resided in Memphis, Tenn.; Bishop andKingsville, Texas; Brookings, Webster, and Menno, S.D.; and Bismark, N.D.
Cheri Peterson Johnke was born Aug. 15, 1944, in Sioux City, Iowa, and raised primarily in Arco, Idaho. Leroy, son of Francis L. and Anna Mae Frinkman Johnke, was born Oct. 25, 1945 in Viborg, S.D. and was raised on the family farm inDelaware Township. Leroy attended grade school at Rose Cottage School District #68.
Leroy's ancestors began farming in Lincoln County in 1870. Erich, Andrew, and Barton represent the fifth generation on the William J. Johnke, Jan Groen, and Henry Frinkman Sr. families to reside in Lincoln County.'
