Biography
Simon Horspoole was recorded in the Visitation of London in 1568 as a Citizen and Draper of London, son of John Horspoole of London, gent, and Hawis Baker. The visitation also recorded that he married Elizabeth, daughter of John Smyth of Cossam (Corsham) Wiltshire, and had issue: William; Simon; Thomas; Elizabeth; Mary; and Hawis.
Simon Horsepoole married Elizabeth Smithe by General Licence dated 14 Apr 1562, London.
He was noted in the will of Simon Harding, husband of Ursula Smythe (his niece), the will made on 09 Apr 1580 and proved on 05 Jan 1581/1582.
In the will of his brother in law, Thomas Smythe esq., the will made on 22 May 1591 and proved on 29 October 1591, the Testator bequeathed to his ‘brother’ Horsepoole and his wife, £250.
The will of Alice (Judde) Smythe, made on 10 Jul 1592 included bequests to her brother Horsepoole and his wife; her cousin Kinge and his wife; her cousin William Horspoole; her cousins Simon, Thomas, Hawis, Joan and Katherine Horspoole.
Simon Horspoole was buried on 20 Jan 1601/1602 at All Hallows, Lombard Street, London.

A survey of London from the 18th Century included All Hallows, Lombard Street and the following was recorded:
In the Chancel is a fair stone placed, against his pew door, with this inscription: Here lieth buried the body of Simon Horsepool, free of the Drapers Company; also free of the antient Wool-Staple; free of the Merchants-Adventurers of the old Haunce and Muscovia. He was chosen Sheriff of London, An. 1591. He married Elizabeth Smith, daughter to John Smith, of Cosham, in the County of Wiltshire, Gent. And Sister to Thomas Smith, Customer of London; and by her he had Issue three Sons and three Daughters, William, Simon and Thomas; Elizabeth married with Alexander King, one of the Queen’s Majesty’s Auditors; Hawys, married with Francis Dorrington, Merchant of Tripoly; and Joan married with John Whitebrooke, Gent. He died the 14th Day of January, 1601, aged 75 years.
He dwelt in Grass-Church-Street in this Parish, 35 Years, and he appointed to this Parish of All-Saints, 4 l. 4 s. every Year for ever; and also 4 l. 4 s. to the Parish of St. Christopher’s by Cornhill, where he was born, and where his Father John Horsepoole, (also free of the Drapers Company, and born in Leicestershire) dwelt and lies buried. That every Sunday Morning Service, there be given to 12 poor People of this Parish, to every one of them one Penny Loaf of Wheaten Bread, and also every Sunday to 12 poor people of St. Christopher’s Parish to one of them one Penny Loaf of Wheaten bread; and every Year upon the St. Thomas the Apostle’s Day, to every one of the said 24 poor People 1 s. in Money; and every Year upon the said St. Thomas’s Day, to the two Parish Clerks of the said Parishes, and every one of them for their Pains 13 s. 4 d. and to the two Sextons of the said Parishes, and to every one of them for their Pains 6 s. 8 d. In Performance whereof William Horsepoole, Son of the said Simon Horsepoole, hath granted two several Annuities and Rents, Charge of 4 l. 4 s. a-piece out of an House in Corbet’s-alley in Grace-church-street, in the Parish of St Peter, to certain Parishioners of the said Parished respectively, and their Heirs in Trust, to the aforesaid Uses for ever.
