Robert Smith was recorded in the Visitation of Wiltshire in 1623[1][2] as the son and heir of Mathew Smith of Corsham and his wife Sibell Curtys of Henley upon Thames. Robert Smith was married to Esther Castrill of East Caston, Berkshire.

In the will of his uncle, "Robert Smithe of Cossham [Corsham] Gent", the will made on 10 Dec 1599 and proved on 18 Jan 1599/1600[3], the Testator made bequests as follows: "Item I give and bequeathe unto Katherin Smithe daughter of my loving brother Mathew Smithe the full sume of six poundes thirtene shillings and foure pence of good and lawfull monie of England to be paide unto her at the age of eighteen yeares or daie of her marriage which shall firste come or happen to be. Item I give to Robert Smithe the son of the saide Matthew Smithe Tenn poundes of lawfull monie of England to be paid unto him at the age of one and twentie yeares".

Robert was noted in the will of his mother, Sibill Smith of Corsham, Wiltshire, the will made on 18 Oct 1641 and proved on 13 Jan 1641/1642[4].
