Kind(eren):
1901 aged 3, living near the Church, Post Office, Upper Gravenhurst with parents, Reuben and Adeline Parrish, and siblings.
1911 aged 13, living at Gravenhurst, Ampthill with parents, Reuben and Adeline Parrish, widowed great uncle Thomas Parrish, and seven siblings.
Roland (or Rowland) James was born in Gravenhurst on 21 January 1897. At the age of 18 he
went to Canada to join his elder brothers in Gladstone, Manitoba. Like Percy and Cyril he
signed up for the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force when the Great War broke out,
and was enlisted on 17 December 1915. He was barely 1-9. He survived the war unscathed
and was discharged at Winnipeg in June 1918 when he applied for land under the Soldier
Homestead Grants scheme. The 1921Canadian Census shows him living in Neepawa,
probably with Cyril. But in the next few years he returned to England and by 1925 was living
at Middle Farm, Streatley, with brothers Cyril and Bob.
ln 1927 he married Hilda Elizabeth Lankester (or Lancaster), daughter of Joseph and Alice
Lankester, at East Hyde, near Luton. Joseph was a farm labourer but had moved about a bit,
from Salford, Beds where he was born, to Wavendon, where Hilda was born, to Biggleswade
where her brother Cyril was born, to Duloe near St Neots (1911 Census). lt is not clear why
the marriage took place at East Hyde.
Hilda was always known as Queenie for some reason. She and Roland had two children: Rex
(b. 1928)who married Margaret Clark of Brixworth, Northamptonshire in 1957, and Delia (b.
1929 who married John Goodman of Flitwick in 1960.
Between 1931 and 1945 they were living at Chalk Farm, Chaul End, near Luton, after which
they moved to Chapel End Farm at Houghton Conquest where they lived until 1963. They
then moved to Manor Farrn at Houghton where Roland died in 1965. Their son Rex took
over the farm and Queenie moved to a bungalow, Vean Parc, not far from Manor Farm. She
died on l April 1983 and left estate of £271178, largely, one assumes, the value of the
house.
