1911 aged 8, living at Gravenhurst, Ampthill with parents, Reuben and Adeline Parrish, widowed great uncle Thomas Parrish, and seven siblings.
Winifred (always known simply as Win) was born in Gravenhurst on 2 September 1902 and
lived at Cart's Farm until her marniage to Arthur Bottoms on 26 November 1932. He was the
son of Charlotte ('Lottie') Bottoms and an unknown father and was born on 21 May 1899 in
Gravenhurst. Lottie was the daughter of Thomas and Eliza Bottoms of Gravenhurst; she also
had another illegitimate child, Lilian, by another father. The Bottoms familv had lived in the
village since at least the beginning of the 18th century.
Towards the end of the Great War (on 4 June 1918) he enlisted in the army and was drafted
into the Guards Machine Gun Regiment. He was too young to sign up earlier. As the war
ended in November that year he saw very little service and it is likely that it was all spent in
England rather than France.
On discharge he reverted to farm work taking jobs at Cart's Farm, Highlands Farm, Campton,
with George and Beatrice Cooke, and Lodge Farm, Chicksands. In 1932 he married Winifred
Parrish and they settled for a time at New Farm Cottage, Streatley, near Luton. Their
daughter Margaret Adeline was born there on 25 February 1935. But it was to be a short
marriage as Arthur fell ill with influenza, which led to nephritis, and died on 23 October
1936. He left a will with an estate valued at £3I2.15s 5d.
Win returned to live at Cart's Farm. Two years later she met Arthur Young of Ravenstone and rnarried him there in 1941. Two years later, on 5 June I943, their daughter Elizabeth Rita was born.
Margaret married Dr Bryan Gillett, a young anaesthetist, in 19?? and went to live in London. They had two daughters, Susan and Jane.
Elizabeth married Christopher Thomas, who worked at the Bank of England, in 1965. They
set up home at 5 Campton Road, which had seen many members of the family living there.
Until Arthur died in 1970 Win was the farmer's wife and ran the household which still
included her unmarried sister Doll. She and Arthur had one major holiday, a trip to Canada
to see her brother Percy in 1967. Following Arthur's death her brothers Jack and Ken ran
the farm for her but she decided the farmhouse was too big for one person - Doll had died
in 1967 - and it was agreed that she would swap houses with Elizabeth and Christopher.
Win died on 27 February 1989 at Margaret and Bryan's home in Highgate, London. She left
estate valued at £82874, which was largely the value of the farmland.
