Norbertijn van de abdij van Postel, Rustend Bisschop van het bisdom Lolo (Zaïre), Geboren te Oud Turnhout op 16 maart 1911, ingekleed te Postel op 9 oktober 1928, sprak zijn kloostergelofte uit op 9 oktober 1930 en werd priester gewijd op 24 augustus 1931.
Hij was missionaris in het bisdom Lolo van 1936 tot 1988. Hij stond aan het hoofd van dit bisdom als Apostolisch Prefekt van 1949 tot 1962 en als Bisschop van 1962 tot 1981.
Hij overleed, voorzien van het Sacrament van de zieken, Op vrijdag 20 april 1990, in het H Hart ziekenhuis te Mol.
“de heer is met mij, ik ben niet bevreesd”. Deze woorden uit de psalm waren kenmerkend voor de levenshouding van Mgr. Waterschoot. Ze zijn in hem uitgegroeid tot een diepe levensovertuiging. Onbevreesd en onvermoeibaar bezocht hij als inspecteur de eerste schooltjes in de Brousse. Rekenend op Gods zegen liet hij grote en mooie kerken bouwen. Hij geraakte niet paniek toen de rebellen met geladen geweren voor hem en de missionarissen stonden. Hij bleef rustig, kalm en vol overgave toen hij begreep dat zijn levens einde nabij was.
Hij was, dankbaar voor alles wat men voor hem deed. Zijn woord was steeds “We zijn in Gods hand, op Zijn bijstand mogen wij rekenen”. Bijna roekeloos ging hij ook 's nachts op pad om zieken op te halen. Hij durfde met gevaar voor zijn eigen leven de mensen gaan bezoeken in zijn door de rebellen bezette bisdom. Hij kon dat omdat zijn vertrouwen in Gods bescherming ongeschokt bleef ondanks alles. Zichzelf telde hij niet, maar waagde alles als hij missionarissen in gevaar wist. Bij moeilijkheden kon men steeds op zijn zorg en steun rekenen. Als bisschop koos hij als wapenspreuk: “Sub Tuum Praesidium”. Hij voelde zich verzekerd van de bescherming en de voorspraak van Maria, voor wie hij een innige devotie koesterde en uitdroeg. Monseigneur was niet in te denken zonder rozenkrans en spoorde allen aan om tot Maria te bidden. In de meimaand was hij de eerste om samen met de mensen van Lolo het rozenhoedje te bidden bij het beeld van Maria aan de ingang van de missie.
Monseigneur kreeg maar 2 jaar om na 52 jaar missieleven in de abdij een rustiger leven te leiden. Het zijn jaren geweest van gebed, van heel veel gebed, van trouw aan het koorgebed en van doorleefd persoonlijk gebed op zijn kamer. Hij bleef innig verbonden met allen uit het bisdom Lolo. Zoals hij steeds aan de armen en de sukkelaars zijn tijd, zijn liefde en geduld had gegeven in de missie, zo waren zij nu de eerste in zijn gebeden. Monseigneur, dank voor uw voorbeeld van gebed en trouw. Dat uw loon in de hemel zou zijn, daaraan heeft U nooit getwijfeld. Rust nu in vrede. Nu zijt gij een voorspreker voor het bisdom Lolo, voor de abdij en al de confraters. Dank U.
