Tante Marie ken ik het best van mijn stagetijd aan de Christus Koningschool. De lunchpauze was te kort om naar huis te fietsen en tante (die toen al weduwe was) vond het ontzettend gezellig dat ik bij haar op de Nieuwe Terheijdenseweg kwam eten. Ze kon goed koken en maakte alleen mijn favoriete hap klaar. Met name haar gehaktballen en gelatinepudding met vruchtjes waren ongeëvenaard. Je werd door haar ontzettend verwend. Na haar intrede bij de familie Schoenmakers (de Bredase vicaris Vincent Schoenmakers werkzaam bij het bisdom, was een neef) probeerde ze altijd een beetje deftig te doen. In haar taalgebruik struikelde ze daarbij weleens over moeilijke woorden: zo werd antenne bij haar een antemdem. Daarnaast was ze vooral heel gastvrij en hartelijk.
Ze woonde haar laatste levensjaren in een flatje van huize Overakker, waar ook mijn schoonvader Jan Appels vertoefde.
