Elizabeth Verdoorn, age 90, of Orange City, passed away on Wednesday, March 20, 2013, at the Orange City Area Health System Hospital.
Elizabeth "Betty" Harriet Verdoorn was born on May 18, 1922, at Hospers, the daughter of Nick and Minnie (De Roo) Mantel. She was raised on a farm near Newkirk and attended the Newkirk School.
On July 10, 1942, she married Bert Verdoorn at Orange City. They first made their home in Omaha, Nebraska. After World War II, they settled at Sheldon. In 1968, they moved to Orange City. During their retirement years, Bert and Betty spent many winters in Mesa, Arizona. They became residents of the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in April of 2003. Bert passed away on July 12, 2003, in Orange City.
Mrs. Verdoorn was a member of the First Reformed Church.
She was a homemaker and also a seamstress in her home. In addition, she was employed at Margy's Drapery Shop in Orange City.
Betty liked working puzzles, needle work, and enjoyed playing games with her friends and family.
Survivors include her son-in-law and his wife, Norman and Deb Wolf, of Le Mars; two grandsons and their wives, Ryan and Tabbatha Wolf and Steven and Erin Wolf, all of Sheldon; five great-grandchildren, Holly, Mitchel, Rachel, Alison, and Natalie Wolf; and a sister-in-law, Barbara Mantel, of Sioux Center.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Cheryl Wolf; a brother, Jacob "Jack" Mantel, and a sister and her husband, Wilmina "Mina" and Garry Wielenga.
