LORRAINE VAN NIEUWENHUIZEN was born on October 29, 1936 to James and Jennie (Jongetjes) Verbrugge in Leota, Minnesota. She attended Leota Christian Grade School and then attended and later graduated from Southwest Christian HighSchool in Edgerton, Minnesota. On October 27, 1955 Lorraine was united in marriage to Donald Van Nieuwenhuizen at the Ebenezer Christian Reformed Church in Leota. The couple lived in Edgerton for more than a year and then moved to Luverne, Minnesota. Their marriage was blessed with two children, Randy and Darla. Lorraine was a homemaker to their children and later in life, enjoyed working part time for Mulder Auctions. On Monday, July 13, 2020, Lorraine died peacefully at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne at the age of 83 years, 8 months and 14 days.

Lorraine was a member of the Luverne Christian Reformed Church. Music served as a big part in her life – playing piano and accordion, singing in a ladies trio for many years and serving as a church organist for 40 years in the Luverne Christian Reformed Church. Lorraine enjoyed nature, especially bird watching, camping with her family and friends, flowers, embroidering work and knitting. Over the years she made many afghans for gifts and donation sales.

Those left to cherish Lorraine’s memory are her son, Randy and his wife Sara Van Nieuwenhuizen of Luverne; a sister, Elizabeth Van’t Hof of Leota, Minnesota; a brother, Dr. James and his wife Marcia Vergrugge of Watkinsville, Georgia; and other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Don in 2013; daughter, Darla Joy in 1991; parents, James and Jennie Verbrugge; a sister, Marie Schelhaas; two brothers-in-law, Tony Van’t Hof and Bert Schelhaas; two nephews and a niece.
