Nellie Christians, 86, Edgerton, died Tuesday, August 16, 2005 at the Pipestone County Medical Center, Pipestone.
Funeral services were held Friday, August 19 at First Christian Reformed Church, Edgerton with burial in Hillside Cemetery, Edgerton.
Nellie Verbrugge Hoogwerf Christians was born at Hillcrest Farm near Chandler on Aug. 10, 1919 to Jacob and Maria (van der Vliet) Verbrugge. She was the youngest of 11 brothers and sisters. Nellie's first year of schooling took place in a one-room country schoolhouse. In 1935, she moved with her parents to Edgerton where she graduated from Edgerton Public School.
She made her profession of faith in Jesus Christ at Edgerton Christian Reformed Church.
After attending Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich., Nellie taught school in Prinsburg.
She married Henry Hoogwerf, who was principal of the Prinsburg Christian School, on June 8, 1943. Henry died in 1949, and Nellie returned to teaching school.
On June 26, 1959, she married George Christians.
Nellie continued her employment at the Edgerton Christian Elementary School as teacher and librarian. She and George, after many years together on the farm, moved into Edgerton where they were involved in volunteer activities for the church, the Christian schools, Edgebrook Care Center and tutoring Laotian students.
George died on July 9, 1997. In 2003 Nellie became a resident of Edgebrook Care Center, but continued to be involved with Crossroads Bible Institute correcting prisoners' Bible lessons.
She is survived by two children, Dr. Byron (Heidi) Hoogwerf, Cleveland Heights, Ohio and Verla (Jerry) Blom, Grand Rapids, Mich.; three stepchildren, Clares (Dena) Christians, Edgerton; Rolland (Joyce) Christians, Sioux Falls, S.D. and Lavonne Roach, Byron Center, Mich.; 17 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren and one brother-in-law, Cornie (Anne) Prins, Byron Center, Mich.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Henry and George; her brothers, James, Nick, John, Cornelius and Frank; her sisters, Grace, Marie, Hattie, Alice and Elizabeth; her son-in-law, Dick Roachand numerous in-laws.
