BIOGRAPHY: Mystery enshrouds the genealogy and the history of this woman. Her
existence has been affirmed by several elderly and wide-spaced members of the
family, who also affirmed the existence of her daughter, Blanche. Lydia
Pridmore was born on 8 Jan 1861 and William Morris Pridmore was born on 7 Jan
1863, so there is chronological space for Mary Ann Pridmore to be born late in
1861 or early 1862. Application for a copy of her entry of birth to the
principal registrar in Adelaide has resulted in failure, the claim being made
that there is "no record".
BIOGRAPHY: Louisa Maria Griffiths stated that Mary Ann Pridmore was a daughter
of George Pridmore and Mary Ann Noonan; that she married; that she died aged
50 years, and was buried in Church of England section of the Fremantle
Cemetery.
BIOGRAPHY: Florence Edith Marie Lihou stated that a daughter was born to
George Pridmore and his wife and she went to Kalgoorlie and to Beaconsfield
(near Perth) and who married.
BIOGRAPHY: Several persons quoted the date of 7 Jul 1912 as the date of her
death. Mavis Evelyn Campbell wrote a letter "before the year 1906, my mother
(Louise Maria Griffiths) was met by Mary Pridmore and her daughter Blanche at
Fremantle and taken to her home. Blanche then appeared to be ten or twelve.
Mum always said that her sister Mary Ann Pridmore died after her mother, a few
weeks. In 1940 we went to live near the cemetery, and she (Louisa Maria
Griffiths) went looking for the grave-so she knew."
BIOGRAPHY: Uncle Niel visited the grave in 1956. It was grave 475 in section
AA of Anglican portion Old Fremantle General Cemetery. A small shield-shaped
marble slab had been erected over the grave which bore the following
inscription.
"In loving memory of Mary Pridmore, died 7 July 1912, aged 50 years. At rest".
From the burial register in the sexton's office Uncle Niel ascertained that
her full name was Mary Ann Pridmore. Her mother, Mary Ann Pridmore nee
Noonan, had died on 23 Jun 1912, thus the chronological difference is two
weeks.
BIOGRAPHY: The following funeral notice appears in the issues of 9 July 1912
and 12 July 1912 of "The West Australian". "Funeral. The burial of the late
Mrs. Mary Ann Pridmore, who died suddenly on Sunday last at her residence,
took place on Tuesday afternoon, in the Chuch of England portion of the
Fremantle Cemetery, the Rev. F.T. Bowen officiating at the graveside. The
chief mourners were Miss Blanche Pridmore (daughter), Master Archie Pridmore
(son), Mrs Thom, Miss Ruby Barber, Mr. R. Rose, Mesdames Sheedy, Dixon, Grant,
Touchell, and Misses Dollie and Rose Dixon. The pall-bearers were Messrs. W.H.
Ringer, A. Attwood, S. Rose, and T.J. Touchell. The funeral arrangements
were carried out by Messrs. Arthur E. Davies & Co., Market Street, Fremantle."
Uncle Niel received from the Registrar-General in Perth a certified copy of an
entry of deaths pertaining to the death of Mary Ann Pridmore which affirms
that she died 7 July 1912, was aged 50, cause of death was heart failure, and
her father was George Pridmore and her mother was Mary -----?., and that she
was born in Adelaide, South Australia, had lived in South Australia 38 years,
and W.A. 12 years, that she was single with no issue.
BIOGRAPHY: Further confusion is caused by an entry of marriage received in
June 1956, which appears to pertain to Blanche Pridmore and James Rose, as
follows---"married 16 May 1914 in North Fremantle, James Richard Rose and
Blanche Beatrice Pridmore. He aged 24, batchelor and a butcher, she aged 24,
a spinster and engaged in home duties, both living in Fremantle. His parents
Samuel Rose, carpenter, and May Forrest. Her parents, Frank Pridmore, engine
driver, and Mary Ann Bridgewood. Married in the residence of Mr. T. Touchell,
Fremantle." This Blanche must certainly be the Blanche mentioned in the
funeral notice because of the mention of the names Rose and Touchell as well.
If she was 24 in 1914 then she was born in 1890, when Mary Ann Pridmore was
still in Adelaide.
BIOGRAPHY: Madeline Hitchin stated that Mary Ann Pridmore, nee Noonan, gave
birth to fifteen children, forteen of whom are definitely known and documented.
There is no more information about Mary Ann Pridmore, whether she did in
fact marry, or created her husband for the benefit of her family and children.
