He left wife and baby daughter, equipped some ships and became a pirate, mainly in the Straits of Malakka. He operated under the names de Vent, Monseigneur de Merode, Dumouriez an Damirat. He also intrigued against and for the Dutch, British, and native Governments and did well enough to retire on some land a native ruler, the Tangku Besar of Kampar, granted him as reward for his services. Louise went mad anddied in an insane asylum.
