While HENDRIK and William were their father's sons and obsessively (luckily for us) kept alive the Scottish traditions, the girls seem to have been very much their mother's daughters not interestedin keeping up with the Mac Gillavry part of their pedigree. Oom Edwin writes in his narrative about Theodorus Hendrik Mac Gillavry: "When still quite young he was sent to The Netherlands for his education. Since his mother (ANNA THEODORA Mac Gillavry-Maurisse) was left behind (by HENDRIK's untimely death of cholera) in straightened circumstances and could contribute very little to his upkeep, he boarded with the humble family of a coal dealer in Zwolle. At that time his grandmother (ELISABETH) Mac Gillavry(-Landevelt) and his uncle and aunt van der Vegte(-Mac Gillavry) still lived there. It is strange that he was not taken in by them and that there is nothing known of any contact between them."
Aunt Wilhelmina Paulina and her very properly and respectably Dutch husband probably were too intent on and too busy fitting into the very proper and respectable Dutch Society of their town to be willing to associate, much less take in, a member of the wild, exotic, raffish even, Indo-Dutch bunch. I am guessing that Aunt Wilhelmina Paulina also had to live down her barely legitimate birth in addition to her outlandish maiden name. She was born just 5 weeks after her parents' wedding.
