Cabinet maker in Elgin. He joined the Scottish Brigade under Major General Dundas 23 March 1781 bound for The Netherlands. He became a teacher of the English language in Zwolle, Overijssel, where he had an affair with, impregnated and married his pupil ELISABETH Landevelt, his junior by 22 years, and started the Dutch and Indo-Dutch branches of the Clan Mac Gillavry. Their first child, a daughter, was born one month after they were married. Oom Edwin gives the following physical description of him: "He was short of built, a bit more than 5 feet 5 inches (1 metre 60 centimeters), and broad in the shoulders. He had reddish hair and the fair skin and light-blue eyes associated with it." The description, he tells us, comes from the records of Scottish soldiers at the Ministry of War (Ministerie van Oorlog).
