Left an orphan after her father had drowned in the North Sea and her m other had died from typhoid fever. Came to America at age 14 with sec ond cousins, the Fred Junker family (whose descendants lived in Comfre y and Mountain Lake, MN in 1970s) and settled in Grundy County, Iowa. S he worked, essentially, as an indentured servant for an American Engli sh immigrant family. Her oldest brother, Ben, had come to America bef ore the rest of the family. It is presumed that Arnold and Ernest cam e to the U.S. with Gretchen and the Junkers. She died from a stroke.

Gretchen C. Smith, formerly Gretchen Hook, was born in East Friesland , Germany, April 7, 1878 and died May 26, 1933, aged 55 years, 1 mont h and 19 days. She came to this country an orphan as her parents die d while she was quite young. She first came to Grundy County, Iowa, in1 893, where she resided until 1899. On February 16, 1900, she was unit ed in marriage to Claus E. Smith and they made their home in HancockCo ., Winnebago County, and again in Hancock County, Iowa until 1911, when theycam e to Cottonwood County, MN, where she resided until her death. At the ag e of 20 years she was converted in Apllington, Iowa where she and her hu sband were baptized into the German Baptish Church by Rev. William Pfe ifer. Then two years later they became members of the Baptist Church at Buffalo Center, Iowa, and in 1917 they were charger members of the ne w church at Jeffers, MN. She was ever faithful to her church and the Lord. For nearly 5 years she has been an invalid, being confined to h er chair, where she manifested a sweet, patient, Christian spirit. He r greatest desire was to go home and to meet her Lord and Savior. Sh e leaves to mourn her departure her husband, C. E. Smith, five sons Er nest E., John E., Emil E., Claus and Fred, all of Windom, MN, also fou r daughters, Mrs. Minnie M. Groves, of Bingham Lake, Mrs. Anna Johnso n of Avon, South Dakota, and Clara and Gertrude Smith of Windom. One daughter, Jennie, had gone on before in 1922. She also leaves three granddaught ers, Ruth and Maralyn Groves of Bingham Lake, and Darleen Johnsonof Av on, South Dakota, and three brothers, Ben E. Hook, of Bufffalo Center, Iowa,Arnol d Hook of Columbus Nebraska., and Ernest H. Hook of Aplington, Iowa, besides a host of other relatives and friends who remember her for her unselfi sh Christian character. Her thoughts were always of others. Thefuner al was held at the Jeffers Baptist Church being in charge of herpastor , Rev. C. F. Saeckman of Minneapolis, assisted by former pastorAbe de V ries of Windom, and internment was made in the Delft Cemetery.
