Gretje was the daughter of Rudolf Fokken, a farmer, and the Mayor of Irhove, born in Collinghorst, and Tjake Hinderks Hayenga of Folmhusen,Germany. Gretje is buried at the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church Cemeter, Grundy County, Holland, Iowa. After the death of her husband inIhren, Germany, she and six of the children (2 sons and 4 daughters) came to America in 1873 to be with Harm and Hinderk, who had come herein1868. The oldest son, Eernst, already married remained and died there. Harm and Hinderk accompanied by a relative, Koerd Hoek, arrivedbytrain at Ackley, Iowa, after first stopping in Illinois where Koerd Hoek remained.
Eernst Behrends Hoek owned a freight ship and died on the North Sea during a storm--he was not recovered.
