California, USA death list gives mother's name Pope
Hester used the maiden name Shirek throughout her life, but it is not clear from the circumstances whether or not Milton was actually her father. In her lawsuit filed against Milton in September 1899, Ysabel;Isabella claimed she had met Milton in San Bernardino and that he had agreed to marry her in November 1898. At this point Hester would have been over age one, and one asks if he were the father, why Isabella didnt press her suit earlier. She then stated that she demanded Milton marry her in April 1899, which would have been about the time she would have found herself pregnant with Henry. Hester appears not to have been born in Oakland, as was her younger brother Henry, but perhaps in San Bernardino, where her mother claims she first met Milton Shirek
Hester filed for divorce from EDWARD ARNBERGER. According to his court testimony in December 1922, she had a child when she married him, March 5, 1917, but he did not believe she had married the father of that child, who has not been identified.
Oakland Tribune, December 6, 1922, p. 32.
Interestingly, a June Burton, mother's maiden name "Homberge," was born in Alameda County, 10 June 1917. Holmerberge is the name that appears as a surname on the birth record of Violet, born 30 August 1920, in Alameda County. Burton was Isabella's maiden name. Isabella can be found in the 1880 census as Isabel, daughter of Mary (born Mexico), in Knox Twp., Napa County, California, USA (E.D. 78, page 429) with an older brother Napoleon and younger sister Emma. In 1870, the family was enumerated in the city of Napa, still no adult male in the household.
A child was involved in a battery charge by Hester against Edward in December 1918.
Oakland Tribune, December 15, 1918, p. 52.
Hester did have two more recorded daughters: Violet M., born 30 August 1920 (also an inmate of age nine at St. Mary's Orphanage in Oakland in 1930), and Alice M. born 12 May 1922, of whom no more could be learned. In his 1922 testimony, Edward denied being the father of Violet.
