Los Angeles Time Sept 1899.Oakland: Isabel Dolores Neil of San Bernadino has instituted proceedings against Milton Shirek of San Francisco, California, USA to recover $10,000 damages for alleged breach of promise. The defendant is a clothing manufacturer of considerable means. Francisco Call, September 7, 1899, p. 11, col. 3
Hester used the maiden name Shirek throughout her life, but it is not clear from the circumstances whether or not Milton was actually her father. In her lawsuit filed against Milton in September 1899, Ysabel;Isabella claimed she had met Milton in San Bernardino and that he had agreed to marry her in November 1898. At this point Hester would have been over age one, and one asks if he were the father, why Isabella didnt press her suit earlier. She then stated that she demanded Milton marry her in April 1899, which would have been about the time she would have found herself pregnant with Henry. Hester appears not to have been born in Oakland, as was her younger brother Henry, but perhaps in San Bernardino, where her mother claims she first met Milton Shirek
