The 100 th birthday of Moses Montefiore, a year before his death in 1885. This is an interesting and unusual piece of Judaic ephemera. Montefiore, (he was 6 ft. 3 in. tall) the most famous British Jew of the 19th century, began his career as a businessman. Born in Leghorn, Montefiore was brought up in London, where he was taught elementary Hebrew by his mother's brother. First apprenticed to a firms of grocers and tea merchants, he left to become one of the 12 "Jew brokers" in the City of London. After his retirement in 1824, he dedicated himself to civic and community affairs, as well as to living a religiously observant life. He undertook projects to help the Jews in Israel launch economic and agricultural ventures and visited Israel several times. From 1837-38 he served as sheriff of London and was knighted by Queen Victoria, later receiving a baronetcy in 1846 for his humanitarian work. He used his prestige to advocate abroad to stop the persecution of Jews, traveling to Romania, Russia and Morocco. His 100th birthday was a public holiday for Jewish communities around the world.

Letter frm Vicki DeGoff about the Thanksgiving Photo to Sherry:
""Top from left is Judith (in profile looking wistfully off in the distance), Elede (Toppy) Morris, Charlotte (Chickie) Morris and my mom. Jewel is in the next row down far left wearing large glasses. Patsy (my mom's sister) is in the middle in front of Chickie with really long (frizzy) hair. I would guess that the older couple sitting in 3d and 4th position from left are the Shirek parents Adolph and (but maybe they're the Alexander parents).
The Morris girls were (second) cousins of my mom on the Shirek side and we were always very close to them, especially Chickie. Eleonor was the oldest of the three, but I don't see her there unless I'm wrong and the tall girl next to mom is Eleonor instead of Chickie. Eleanor and Chickie moved to New York in the 50s. After mom died, we would go spend Thanksgiving with them every year. After Chickie died, we had a huge celebration of her life at our house because she still had so many SF friends. Toppy is the only one who had children. She has a son Bruce about our age who lives in Pacifica. "
