For what it is worth, I vividly remember the story of Dad's father, Joseph Adler, coming to the US to avoid being inducted into the Czar's Army.
Re: Manus -- yes, I thought my whole life grandpa's name was Manual, so Emanuel for Noah's middle name didn't seem too far off. I saw Arnold's email and thought I had been mistaken my whole life...didn't want to fess up my ignorance to our brand new cousin. Lesson learned!

Well, I have started a "family" folder on Yahoo - I suspect it will be the largest of 30 or more folders before long. Also have a "family" group address. Everyone please add Evie's email address to your address books - we have separate Yahoo accounts and only one computer.
Wow, regarding my Dad's name. I am sure he though his official name was Emanuel or possibly Manual. Never, ever heard "Manus." Sounds very Roman Catholic.
Uncle Arnie Adler was a short order chef when he died in 1955. Never knew that he had been in the insurance business. He and Eleanor lived in a walk-up apartment, which no doubt contributed to his final heart attack. I suspect Eleanor rarely left the apartment due to her polio affliction. I do know that Aunt Dorothy visited Eleanor several years after Arnie's death and Eleanor was not being treated very well by her family. Sad as she had a very difficult life.
In later life, Joseph Adler (my grandpa) was a very dapper individual. Always dressed in a three piece suit and tie, even when visiting us in San Diego. He used to spend a lot of time with "Old Man" Mrr Thompson who lived across the street. I guess they spent hours on the Thompson front porch talking about the old days.
When Mom, Dad and I used to visit San Francisco, I remember Grandpa taking me down to Fisherman's Wharf while my parents did other activities - no doubt visiting SP friends that Dad had made prior to WWII.
Joseph Adler was also quite a ladies man in later life .... right up until the end. Went out dancing regularly. In fact, after his death, the doctor wondered if boredom and lack of activity in the hospital was the real cause of his death, which I presume was by heart attack. I know my mom used to tell the story that Joseph had been visiting us in San Diego for about a week when she found him packing one morning. Grandpa stated he was going back to San Francisco as he was bored. Re: Manus -- yes, I thought my whole life grandpa's name was Manual, so Emanuel for Noah's middle name didn't seem too far off.
