You dear guests, lift your wine glasses and make a wish.
But let us not forget our three aunts and drink to their health.
The new wed couple is surrounded by three sisters.
Happiness and wealth to them, and may the three aunts in our homeland always be close to our hearts.
A final salute to the three brothers Scherek.
May they live high, high, high. Pg 138.

From Alan Shirek: Carl's family were not very Jewish; this was, of course, the result of Carl marrying a girl who wasn't Jewish. I think Carl's family was one of the first families with dual cultures; Carl's family being Jewish and Laura's family being (at least nominally) Christian. Then, of course, you had the early years in which Carl's family seemed to move around quite frequently, from San Francisco, California, USA to Reading, Stockton, Jackson and Berkeley. I don't think that Carl was particularly successful from a business standpoint. By the time the boys had become young adults, there was the depression followed by WWII. Rolf had been married once, as had Alan. Brownlee was the only brother that had been able to maintain a long-term relationship with his first wife. Rolf was married at least twice, Alan was married three times, and Brownlee was married twice, the second time only after becoming a widower. So, lots of the Los Angeles Shireks had the same fathers and different mothers. By the way, I think Brownlee's "religion" was Communism. I am told that he was a member of the Communist Party during the 30's and 40's. Alan had lots of friends who were Jewish but I think he felt closer to his mother's Christian side of the family than he did to Carl's side of the family. Mostly, they were just non-religious. I got the feeling that my grandfather, Carl, was never very successful in business. (I recall his cousin Helen referring to him as "poor Carl".)
Patent: Application filed November 17., 1900, Serial No, 36,839 (no model). Be it known that we, SAUL W. SHIREK and CARL SHiREK, citizens of Germany and FREDERIC LEROND, a citizen of the USA, 5 all residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, USA, have invented an Improvement in Manifold Continuous CashCheck Devices; and we hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same. Our invention relates to improvements in autographic cash-register devices where multiple copies of checks are to be made. It has for its object the furnishing of a simple, cheap, and compact apparatus wherein the carbon-sheets remain stationary, the paper in multiple layers is drawn between the carbons, the original check or tag and copies torn off at one and the same time, and the succeeding checks left in position ready for use without further manipulation.
Story Jean Beauchamp 4;2000: Uncle Carl had dry goods stoes, one in Jackson and one later in Stockton, San Jaoquin, California, USA. The stores were not profitable and Aunt Lollie unloaded her worried on my grandmother. Aunt Lollie had been a school Teacher in various one-room schools around Shasta County and later in Richmond. When the last store failed, Auntie Carrie took them in to live with her. Finally they learned the insurance business and were able to move a few doors away into a house of their own where they could provide havens when necessary for their three boys and their children. My mother use to say, "You can say a lot about this family, but you can never say anyone of them was dumb."
