The possible middle initial comes from the pension application of her husband, William Edward Hill. He lists his wife's name as Salmah A. Hill. It is possible the 'A' stands for Salmah's maiden surname Alwood.

When Dorothy Donnelly Cawthorn was a girl, she visited the Charles & Mary (Sherwood) Kohler home. She was given the contents of a leather pouch to examine. The papers were transcriptions of pages from the Ephraim & Elizabeth Alwood Bible. Dorothy made a copy of everything for her records. She made a hand-written copy for me about 1988. Dorothy was at my mother's funeral on 1 Feb 1989 in Ashland OH. The copy she made and mailed to me was a year or so before that. Here are some quotations from her copy:
"... Salma Alwood born Aug 17 - 1842 ... Salma Alwood was married July 17 - 1865 ... Property of Mrs. Elizabeth Alwood"
The 1st name, Salma, has no 'h'.
