Leo was the 13th of 14 children and grew up in the Western area where he attended rural school District #36 until his family moved into Western when he was in the sixth grade. Leo finished his schooling at Western Public School, graduating in 1953. He was baptized at St. John's United Church of Christ in 1935 and was later confirmed at the same church. After graduation, for the summer, Leo worked for his brother-in-law in farming and then in the fall of that year he was employed by the Ammunition Depot in Mead, Nebraska. Leo and Bonnie later moved to Elmhurst, IL where Leo attended Elmhurst College for a year and a half. Later, Leo farmed around Fairbury for awhile, then worked for Fairbury Seed Store before going to Briggs Feed Yards at Seward. In 1964, he started working for the Nebraska Dept. of Roads in Dorchester and continued with the state until 1998, when he retired as Lincoln District One Maintenence Superintendent. Upon retirement, Leo spent his time enjoying his family, improving his acreage, restoring older John Deere tractors and going to farm sales.
