Bonnie Lorraine Hohensee was born December 13, 1935 at Narka, Kansas to Henry and Jane (Bevington) Ross, the 5th of six daughters, and passed away suddenly Tuesday, July 12, 2011, at her home near Pleasant Dale at the age of 75 years, 6 months and 29 days.
As soon as she was able to read and write, she enjoyed playing school with her friends and dolls. While she was creating "pretend" school, she attended rural schools in Thayer and Saline County and enrolled in Western High School in the fall of 1949 where she met the love of her life, Leo Hohensee. Bonnie graduated with the class of 1953 and furthered her education at Fairbury Junior College and started her teaching career in a rural school just south of Dorchester. She continued her education and taught near Western, NE. On June 5, 1955, Bonnie was united in marriage to Leo Hohensee at the United Church of Christ in Western, NE and they left for Chicago, IL. While living in Illinois, their first son, Douglas Henry was born and they returned to Fairbury, NE where David Lee was born. In August of 1958 Bonnie answered a call to teach near Fairbury. While living on a farm near Fairbury, their third son, Daniel Ross, was born. They moved to Seward in 1960 and to Dorchester in 1964 where they resided until 1980.
After babysitting for several years, Bonnie, again, began teaching in 1970 in a country school near Pleasant Hill. She was encouraged to continue her education and after completing her degree at Fairbury Junior College she attended classes at Doane College and Seward Concordia College. Bonnie finally received her Bachelor degree in 1973. In 1975, she began teaching at Dorchester Public Schools where she taught 2nd grade for the next 23 years. Bonnie loved teaching and one of her favorite units was on dairy cows and a visit to a dairy farm. In 1998, Leo and Bonnie entered retirement together after 43 years of marriage. Before Leo passed away in 2008, they celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary. She enjoyed many activities including collecting tea pots and apples, gardening, spending time with her family, sisters and friends. Her family was her life and she enjoyed spending time with her children, her eight grandsons and most recently her first great-granddaughter. Bonnie was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid in Pleasant Dale.
