William Marcellus Parker Sapp, 85, died suddenly Tuesday evening at 8:50 in his home on Front street. Mr. Sapp had been ill with a lung congestion but the crisis had been passed and it was thought he was on the road to recovery. He had been in frail health for several years but was active and alert whenever his health would permit.
The son of William and Margaret Pease Sapp, William was born in Hancock county, Indiana on March 17th, 1869. When three years of age the family moved to Story county, Iowa. He grew to manhood in that vicinity coming to Colfax when twenty five years old. He has resided in this vicinity since.
He was united in marriage to Ella M. Pearse July 1, 1897 at the home of her parents in Prairie City. they went to housekeeping in Colfax where Mr. Sapp was employed as a clerk in the Axtel and Clark store. He later teamed and farmed, retiring from active service about seven years before his fiftieth wedding anniversary, which was celebrated in July of 1947.
He was an active member of the Methodist church and was beloved by his family and hosts of friends, acquired through the years as a good neighbor.
He is survived by his wife and seven children, one son John A. Sapp, preceded him in death. Those surviving are Adah M. Manley of Colo, Ia., Floyd Sapp of Cedar Rapids, Ralph N. Sapp of Los Angeles, Calif., Vivian A. Sapp of Knoxville, Paul B. Sapp of Colfax, Ray A. of Chicago, Ill., and Miriam A. Stock of Bedford, Ia.
Funeral services will be held from the Colfax Methodist church at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon with Rev. W. L. Hawn, officiating.
Interment will be in the Waveland cemetery at Prairie City.
