"JOHN G. HARMS
ALLISON - Funeral services were held for John G. Harms of Allison on July 9, at the St. James Lutheran Church in Allison with burial in Riverside Cemetery, Shell Rock. Rev. Bruce Ulstad conducted the services with the Bogel Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
John Harms, son of Henry and Altje Hoodjer Harms, was born January 6, 1912, in rural Butler County and died July 5, 1988, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn., of complicatons following surgery at the age of 76.
He attended rural Butler County schools, Clarksville High School and Wartburg College.
On June 7, 1942, he was united in marriage to Alice Thompson at the Ebenezer Lutheran Church in rural Butler County.
He was employed by the Harms All-Gas Company and the Allison Implement Company, both of Allison. He owned and operated the Harms Implement Company for several years after which he farmed in the Allison area until his retirement.
On December 7, 1942, he was inducted into the army and served as an enlisted man at the Untied States Military Academy, West Point, New York until his discharge on March 13, 1946.
He was a member of the St. James Lutheran Church, serving on the church council for several years, the Allison Amvets, and the American Legion. He served on the Butler County Conservation Bord for many years and helped in the development of the county parks. He also served as a member of the Butler County Fair Board for several years.
Mr. Harms was an avid animal lover and for many years owned, trained, and raced harness horses. He was a member of the Allison Harness Hourse Association and served as president of the association for several years. He was a member of the Iowa Colt Stakes and the United States Trotting Association.
He is survived by his wife, Alice; four brothers, Walter of Shell Rock, Paul of Swedesburg, Albert of Waverly, and James of Allison; four sisters, Grace, Mrs. Justin Winkey of Shell Rock, Martha Harms and Gertrude, Mr. Dan Jerolaman, both of Waverly, and Ella, Mrs. Don Rowe, of Fort Meyers, Florida; many nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers.
