"WALTER HARMS
Walter Harms, 84, of rural Shell Rock, died Tuesday evening, Oct. 2, at the Shell Rock Care Center where he had been a resident for the past two months.
He was born on August 3, 1906, near Allison, the son of Henry and Altje (Hoodjer) Harms. He was baptized at the Friedens Lutheran Church near Butler Center. He attended country school in Jefferson Township, in Butler County, and on March 24, 1923, he was confirmed in the Lutheran Faith at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly. Following his schooling, Walter went to work for a furniture factory in Rockford, Illinois, and later returned to farm with his father.
On June 2, 1935, he was united in marriage to Dora Irene Thompson at the Butler Center Church. The lived and farmed in Butler County and later moved back to his home farm. In 1947 they moved to their present farm at Norton's Corners. Walt retired from farming in 1976 and in the 10 years following his retirement he raised and raced standard bred pacers and trotters for harness racing. During that time he won the Iowa State Fair Harness Races for two consecutive years.
Walter was a member and former church council member at Faith Lutheran Church in Shell Rock. He was also a Shell Rock Township Trustee for many years, a member of the KIoster Cemetery Board, a member the the Norton's Corners School Board, a member of the election committee for Shell Rock Township, a member of the Allison Harness Racing Association, and was a committee member for the Boy Scouts.
Walter is survived by two sons and their wives: Richard and Joyce Harms of Tripoli and Dennis and Carl Harms of Corvallis, Oregon; four grandchildren, Penelope, Mrs. Allen Hoeper of Spring Valley, Minn., Steve Harms of Johnston, and Deborah and Catherine Harms, both of Corvallis, Oregon; three sisters, Martha Harms of Waverly, Ella Rowe of Ft. Meyers, Florida, and Gertrude Jerolaman of Waverly; three brothers, Paul Harms of Swedesburg, Albert Harms of Waverly, and James Harms of Allison. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Dora on October 24, 1989, six brothers and one sister.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 5, at Faith Lutheran Church in Shell Rock with Rev. Vernon W. Fasse officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Shell Rock.
