Services were conducted Wednesday July 21, 1999 at 10:30 at the Hope Reformed Church of rural George, IA for Mrs. Dick (Johanna) Gronewold, 97, of George. Pastor Robert Vander Schaaf officiated with organist Marlene Stubbe and vocal musicby Marvella harberts, Angela Van Briesen, and Hedy Kruger. Serving as casket bearers were james Groen, Gerald Grave, Jr., Larry Davis, Donald Groen, Loren Kix, and Gary Steinke with internment in the Evergreen lawn Cemetery of George, IA.Bolin funeral service was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Johanna (Donker) Gronewold was born January 5, 1902 on a farm east ofGeorge. She was the daughter of John and Engelina (Ackerman) Donker. She attended country school. She married Dick Gronewold on January 20, 1921. to this union 6children were born: Heye, Engelina, John, Dock, Jennie, and Richard (Barney). They farmed east of George for a few years then moved to a farm SW of George. She helped her husband with the farming operation until he was killed in 1947. Shecontinued with her farming until she moved to town in 1968.
Johanna suffered a stroke in 1979, forcing her to reside at the Lyon Manor, Rock Rapids for 2 years. She returned to her own home until 1985 when she suffered another stroke. She then became a resident of the George Good Samaritan Center.The last number of years she spent time doing her favorite pasttime, crocheting. She made many doilies and gave them to relatives, friends and those who cared for her at the Center. She enjoyed the many visits by her children,grandchildren andother relatives and friends.
She died Saturday July 17, 1999 at the Center at the age of 97 years. She leaves to cherish her memories; one son John D and wife Hannah Gronewold of George, IA; 2 daughters Engelina and husband Delmar Groen and Jennie Grave all ofGeorge, IA; 2 daughters-in-law Mabel and husband Ervin Drenth of Ellsworth, MN and Mary Ellen Gronewold of George. Also left to her memories are 1 sister Grace Gronewold of Worthington, MN, 18 grandchildren; 44 great grandchildren and 13great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 3 sons, one daughter-in-law; 2 grandsons; 1 granddaughter; 1 great granddaughter; 1 brother and 4 sisters.
