LifeSketch: Nicholas Lawrence Wykert iphan County, Kansas 79. He was of German parentage, born In Berks county, Pa., Oct. 19, 1795. At the age of 15 he removed to Washington county, Pa., and In 1815 he took up a piece of land in Marshall county, Va., (now West Virginia,) where he lived until 1855 when he came to Doniphan county, Kansas, and brought his family here in 1856. or 40 years, in the Christian Connection, (sometimes called Kewlights) and had read the Bible through 100 times. He at one time was worth considerable property, having made it all by hard work, never a dollar by speculation. He remained comparatively strong and active until within the past few years, when he began to fall. He would frequently walk to town, or to visit his children several miles away. On some of these journeys he would give out and fall and could not get up until someone came along and assisted him. He always carried an old black carpet-sack, apparently empty, but it is said that he had his money in it, amounting to about $1,000, and always kept it by him. It is a wonder that he had not fallen and perished or that some scoundrel did not come along, and finding him helpless, make off with his treasure. For a short time before death he was closely watched, lest he should wander off on one of his pedestrian trips.
