In the 1920 USA Census, conducted in new York city on Jan 8 1920, he is listed as Abraham Shaynkin, lodger, 24 years old and single. Born in Russia, Mother Tongue: Yiddish. Works in a hat shop.

Ellis Island:

Awram Scheinkin immigrated to USA. Arrived in New York on March 1913.
Born Neshin, Russia. Age 17 (born circa 1896). Departed Libau, Latvia. Ship name: Czar.
Occupation: tailor. Can read and write. Nationality: Russia. Race: Hebrew. Last permanent residence: Neshin, Russia. Nearest relative in home country: Father Leiser Scheinkin, Neshin gob Czernigow. Finnal destination: New York, New York. Row 25.

Aarrival was March 4 1913. Adds some info on second page of the manifest: His final destination is NY, NY. He purchased his own ticket. Never been before in USA. Going to join a relative, his brother Benjamin Scheinkin, 20 Liberty Avenue, Brooklyn, NY (address not clear). His height is 5 feet 7 inches. Dark complexion, dark hair, brown eyes.
Note: although not listed together he was on the same ship on the same date as his cousin Hirsch.

Apparently changed his first name from Abraham to Albert at some point in the 1940's.The reason is not clear.

In World War II rgistration card he mentions a Mrs. Berta Shaynkin as his relative - in same address - must be his wife. There is a Bertha Shaynkin who died Nov 15 1955 and has been buried in same cemetery as him. Bertha D. Shaynkin was buried in Mount Lebanon cemetery in the same location (D-322) as him so perhaps side-by-side. See http://www.mountlebanoncemetery.com/location.asp?id=3756223so I am sure this was his wife.
Need to find out if he had children.

In 1940 census (found on MyHeritage, not found on Ancestry) we have Albert Shaynkin, married to Bertha. She is 2 years younger than him. Their ages are stated as 40 and 38 respectively
(in reality he was older than this).
There is also Bertha's mother, Jennie. Her last name is written but it's hard to decipher it. Probably it's Diamond. She's 70 years old and widowed.
Albert born in Russia, Bertha in NY, Jennie in Russia.
Albert's occupation is operator (?), Bertha is Teacher - hard to decipher. Their workplaces are written but hard to decipher.
Doesn't look like they have any children, else they would have been listed here. I suspect they were without children.

In Manhattan, NY city directory of 1959 and of 1960, there is an Albert Shaynkin (possibly our person) living at 18 Monro, the phone number is WOrth 4-7487. Found on Ancestry, images do not add anything else.

In his World War I draft registration card, his name is Abraham Shaynkin.
His home address is Ellington, Conn.

He (Abraham) has, solely dependent upon him for support, a mother, and sister with three children!!
WOW - I have no knowledge of a sister of these fellows! She's also a sister of Zalman Sheinkin, Tami's grandfather!!! I need to check this.
His mother Elka was in Russia at the time. It's possible that his sister was also there and he was sending them money from the USA? It would be exciting if the sister immigrated to the USA, as that would mean she survived the Holocaust. If she remained in Russia finding her descendants would be almost impossible and who knows if she survived the Holocaust.

He is not claiming an exemption from drafting. Medium height, slender built, Brown eyes, Black hair, not bold. This is signed in Connecticut in June 5 1917.
