Mrs. Elinor Noteboom, age 84, of Orange City, passed away on Saturday, July 5, 2014, at the Orange City Area Health System. There will be a memorial service on Wednesday, July 9, at 11:00am, at the Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. John Klompien will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a family prayer service on Wednesday, at 10:00am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Tuesday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the funeral home.
Elinor was born on March 4, 1930, in Orange City, the daughter of John and Angeline (Mouw) de Blauw. She was raised at Orange City, where she graduated from the Northwestern Junior College. She also earned her bachelors degree and studied for her masters degree. For two years, she was a teacher at the Kalamazoo, Michigan, Schools.
On July 24, 1951, she married Thomas Noteboom in Orange City. They made their home in Orange City, where she was a homemaker and a teacher, developing the art departments at the Christian School and Unity Christian High School, both in Orange City. She was also a prolific artist. A highlight of her career was being in Kyoto, Japan, Des Moines sister city, where she received inspiration for the Tranquility Series, her last major work. In November of 2009, she and Tom became residents of the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City. He passed away on October 28, 2010, in Orange City, after more than 59 years of marriage.
Mrs. Noteboom was a lifelong member of the Calvary Christian Reformed Church (formerly Second Christian Reformed) and she belonged to the Christians in the Visual Arts organization. She enjoyed working on projects with her grandchildren.
Survivors include her daughter and her husband, Lucinda and Mark Huizenga, of Orange City; two sons and their wives, Michael and Renee (Faber) Noteboom, of Orange City, and Thomas II and Brenda (Obbink) Notebom, of Johnston; eight grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Ver Hage, of Randolph, Wisconsin.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Betty Boss, Trudy Muyskens, Audrey Van Zanten, and Laura Vermeer; and a brother, John de Blauw, Jr.
