Geo. W. McQUIDDY To Richard SIMS. Mortgage

Know all men by these presents that I have this day sold my negro slave Suckey & her child Caledonia to Richard H. SIMS, for the sum of five dollars to me in hand paid, & the other considerations herein after mentioned, I warrant them to be sound in body & mind & Slaves for life, But this sale is made upon this express condition, that if the firm of McQUIDDY & OSBORNE, or their representatives, do secure and save harmless the said Richard H. SIMS & John STREETER, who are the Securities of the Sd McQUIDDY & OSBORNE, in a note of hand Given to David ELKINS for seven hundred dollars, dated the last of the year 1837 or beginning the year of 1838 and due the 25th Decr. 1838 - Now the said McQUIDDY & OSBORNE shall well and truly pay the said Note of $700, together with the interest thereon, then this Instrument to be void, else to remain in full force & virtue according to Law. Given under my hand & Seal this 28th January 1839. Signed Sealed & delivered in presence of us

Bedford County:Personally appeared before me, William D. ORR, clerk of Bedford County Court, George W. McQUIDDY the bargainor to the annexed Bill of Sale or Mortgage, Executed by said McQUIDDY to Richard H. SIMS and dated the 28th of January 1839 for a negro woman named Suckey and her child Caledonia - with whom I am personally acquainted and who acknowledged that he executed the same for the purposes therein contained.

Know all men by these presents that I have this day bargained & Sold to Richard H. SIMS for the consideration of five dollars to me in hand paid and the other considerations hereinafter mentioned, the following property, to wit, six full feather beds, 36 large blankets, 6 bedsteads, 4 Coverlids - 6 Counterpins (sic) 6 Large Quilts, 1 Large dining table, 1 Large Chest, 2 Bureaus, 1 Book case, 1 Jackson press, 1 Large Chest, 1 Spinning Machine, 1 Small looking Glass, 1 Large Bible 1 Volume McKnights Epistles, 1 Lot of School books, 1 pair dog Irons, 1/2 doz. Split bottom chairs 1/2 doz. Windsor Chairs, 1 Mantle Clock, 4 Candle Sticks - 1 Lot of Glass and Chany Ware, 1 Large Kettle, 1 Lot pails & tubs 1 Lot of pots & kettles, 1 Oven & Skillett, also 1 Mitchells map U.S.A. 1 mans Saddle Quilted, 1 Side Saddle Quilted seat 2 tea Boards 1 Coffee mill 4 Milch cows 3 Hoes 1 Spade & Shovel 1 Cradle 4 Bucketts 1 Churn 4 Axes 1 Lot of Crockery Ware 1 Grind Stone, 2 Setts knives & forks 1 Accordeon 1 Cross cut saw, 1 Tea Kettle, 1 Brass kettle - To have & to hold the same to the said Richard H. SIMS his heirs & assigns forever, but this conveyance is made upon the express condition that if I or my representatives do pay to David ELKIN one note of hand, Given about the first of January 1838 due and payable the 25th Decr. 1838 or the 1st of January 1839, whereon the said Richard H. SIMS is security together with John C. STREETER, then this deed shall be void, Otherwise to remain in full force & virtue according to Law. Given under my hand & Seal the 29th day of January 1839.
