John Haws of Kemper County, MS obtained a land patent from the Columbus Land office on Feb. 27, 1841 (Document No. 27059.) The land was the SW1/4SW1/4 Section 6, Township 9-N, Range 17E for a total of 38.48 acres in Kemper County, MS. The purchase price was $48.10 and the original date of sale was April 23, 1836.

Is listed in the 1842 Tax List Kemper County, MS

The 1850 Mortality Schedule of Kemper County, lists 4 Haws as follows:

John Haws, 43 yrs. b. in NC Died in July of Typhoid
Kerman Haws 32 yrs. b. in NC Died in Sept. of Typhoid
Matheria Haws 16 yrs. b. in NC Died in June of Typhoid

Our John Hawes died in 1850. There is one further interesting land patent which was signed on 3/15/1851 in which a John Hawes receives a patent as an assignee of Choctows, Ash Wa Honah Hoo Nah and Ho Me Ho Tubbee who were representatives of Yok Me Tubbee. The land was the NE1/4 of Section 32, Township 10 N of Range 17 E in Kemper County, MS for a total of 160.6 acres. It is possible that John Haws had applied for the land before his death and the patent was received afterwards.

I believe that Mrs. John Hawes returned to Brunswick County, North Carolina with her family after her husband's death in 1850. We have located records of them in North Carolina. We have speculated that the Solomon Gernd (?) above was Mrs. John Haws' relative or friend who came to escort her and her children back to North Carolina. The IGI states that Mrs. John Hawes was Rebecca Ann Frink. We have no documentation to prove this data, although it fits nicely with information we do have.

Kerman Haws must be Kinion Hawes. Martheria and Nancy are probably the daughters of John Haws.

John Haws was appointed overseer of roads in "room" of Henry Mitchel during the May term, 1830

John Haws served on a jury in Columbus Co during the August term, 1830

John Hows/Haws purchased two tracts of land totaling 60 acres from Joseph Carlisle on Sept 5, 1831. Both tracts were on Simmons Bay. Witnesses were H. Best and Danl Gore. proven May term 1832. Deed Book E-181/182.

John Haws witnessed a Bill of Sale on Sept 2, 1833. Deed Book F-147.
