EARLDOM OF OXFORD (XII) 1417
JOHN (DE VERE), EARL OF OXFORD, 1st son and heir, was born 23 April 1408,at Hedingham Castle. Custody of his lands, &c., was granted to the Dukeof Exeter, and after his death to the Duke of Bedford. While still aminor he seems to have been present in Parliament, 18 February 1425/6, atLeicester, where he was knighted. On 4 July 1429 he had an order forlivery of his inheritance. From March 1429/30 he was frequently appointeda commissioner for various purposes. P.C. 1431. In February 1434/5 he hadlicence to go to the Holy Land. In July 1436 he mustered his retinue atSandwich for the rescue of Calais. He was summoned, with his wife andmother, on 23 July 1437 to the funeral of Queen Joan at Canterbury. In1439 (May-September) he was a commissioner to treat of peace with France.On 16 May 1441 he sailed from Portsmouth to France with the Duke of York.With 6 other peers and his brother, Sir Robert Vere, on 28 May 1454 heundertook to keep the sea for 3 years from 3 April last. In May 1455 hemarched to St. Albans, but arrived the day after the battle. In November1460, in consideration of his infirmities, he was given exemption fromcoming in person to the King, or to any Council or Parliament. However,he was present in Parliament in November and December 1461; but inFebruary 1461/2 he was arrested with his eldest son for plotting againstthe King and committed to the Tower. He was tried for high treason,before the Earl of Worcester, Lord High Constable of England, andcondemned to death.
He married, between 22 May and 31 August 1425 Elizabeth (born circa1410), daughter and heir of Sir John HOWARD, by Joan, sister and heir ofSir Richard WALTON, and daughter of John WALTON;) which Sir John Howardwas son and heir apparent of Sir John Howard, of Wiggenhall, Norfolk, byhis 1st wife, Margaret, suo jure (according to modern doctrine) BaronessPlaiz. He was beheaded on Tower Hill, 26 February 1461/2, and was buriedin the church of the Austin Friars. His widow was forced to surrender herproperty in 1475 to the Duke of Gloucester. She died soon after Christmas(1475 or later), apparently in Stratford Nunnery, and was buried inAustin Friars' Church, London. [Complete Peerage X:236-9, (transcribedby Dave Utzinger)]
