ALICE, suo jure COUNTESS OF SALISBURY, and (by modern doctrine) BARONESSMONTAGU [1299], MONTHERMER [1309] and MONTAGU [1357], only daughter andheir by 1st wife, was 22 at her father's death. She married, in or beforeFebruary 1420/1, Richard NEVILLE, younger son of Ralph, EARL OFWESTMORLAND, being 1st son by his 2nd wife, Joan BEAUFORT, thelegitimated daughter of JOHN OF GAUNT by Katharine SWYNFORD; said to havebeen born in 1400; described as the King's Knight in 1420. He appears tohave been allowed the title of EARL OF SALISBURY from the time of hisfather-in-law's death. He was Warden of the West March of Scotland, June1420 till July 1434, when he undertook the wardenship of both Marches forone year. In 1453 the Earls of Warwick and Salisbury (and the survivor)were appointed joint Keepers of the West March. In November 1424, Keeperof the Forest beyond Trent. At Henry's Coronation, 6 November 1429, heacted as Constable of England in the Duke of Bedford's stead; and he waspresent at the young King's Coronation in Nôtre Dame, December 1431.Constable of Pontefract Castle, 1432. He is said to have served in Franceunder his brother-in-law the Duke of York, when appointed successor thereof the Duke of Bedford in 1436; and, with him, was a commissioner totreat of peace with France. On his return to England, 1437, P.C. In 1441a commissioner to inquire of treasons, felonies, lollardries &c. inLondon and the Home Counties; in 1443, Justice of the Forest beyondTrent, in tail male; in 1446 governor of Barnard Castle; and sometimeChief Steward of the Duchy of Lancaster in the North parts. In 1451 heobeyed the King's summons to come to him at Kenilworth, attended, andseemingly protected, him at Coventry, on his journey from Westminster toNorthampton, and lastly into Kent. In 1454, when, in consequence of theKing's insanity, the Duke of York was acting as his Lieutenant, the Earlwas made Chancellor (2 April); appointed first of a committee of peers toprovide for the safety of the seas; and (December) Keeper of PorchesterCastle. He fought with the Duke of York in the 1st battle of St. Albans,May 1455. At Easter 1458 the King effected a public "reconciliation"between the Earls of Warwick and Salisbury and the Duke of Somerset. Onthe 2nd outbreak of hostilities, September 1459, Salisbury set out fromMiddleham. to join the Duke of York at Ludlow, on the way defeating aLancastrian force from Cheshire at Blore Heath. In October the Yorkistforces melted away before the onset of the Lancastrians led by the King;Salisbury took refuge with the Earl of Warwick in Calais. A "Parliament"was held at Coventry, which attainted the Duke of York, the Earl ofSalisbury and others. On their return from Calais in 1460, Salisbury wasleft to secure London. At Northampton (10 July) King Henry was captured;a Parliament was summoned in the King's name, which (10 October) annulledthe proceedings of the Coventry Parliament, "unduely sommoned." On 12August the Earl was appointed to defend Roxburgh against the Scots; on 29October, Great Chamberlain of England for life. To meet the forcescollected by the Queen, Salisbury marched north with the Duke of York,and was killed at the battle of Wakefield 30 December 1460, or capturedand beheaded after the battle. He was buried at Bisham. The Countess ofSalisbury, his widow, who attended the Coronation banquet of QueenKatharine, 1421, was attainted November 1459, by the Coventry Parliament(as above). In 1460 she was in Dublin with the Duke and Duchess of York,and accompanied the Earl of Warwick on his return thence to Calais. Theattainder was reversed (as above).
