Obituary
In Loving Memory of Francis Lyman Ennis Of Pasadena, Californi a died Tuesday, May 19, 2009 of pancreatic cancer after a relatively short illness. He was born September 6, 1920, in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of William Gibson Ennis, originally of Northern Ireland and Mary Brown Ennis of Marceline, Missouri. Lyman graduated from Kansas City's Paseo High School and attended the University of Kansas before entering the Army Air Corps in 1942. During WWII, Lyman served with distinction as a Captain and fighter pilot in the 45th Fighter Squadron in the Central Pacifi c. Awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with two additional oak clusters and several other Air medals, he led his squadron on over 80 courageous flying missions from various islands in the Central Pacific. After completing his military service, he returned to Kansas City and married Cordelia Alice Murphy of Kansas City, Missouri in 1945 and moved to Los Angeles. He began his career first as a product designer and motion picture set designer prior to obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Southern California in 1953. Lyman's architectural practice was based in Pasadena for over 40 years during which he designed dozens of innovative and unique mid-century post and beam and other homes of contemporary design throughout Southern California, successful retail stores and various other commercial buildings throughout a very productive career. With the help of other architects, engineers and friends, he also took great interest in designing an automated parking system and was curr ently working on a design for a wind energy turbine. He was an active civic volunteer, serving as President of the Pasadena Chapter of the AIA in 1966 and for 46 years on the Building and Grounds Committee of All Saints Episcopal Church. He also served on multiple advisory committees for the City of Pasadena, the Pasadena Unified School District and other civic, neighborhood and business groups. He is survived by his wife Cordelia, daughter Rebecca Ennis Davies and her husband Les Davies, a son, Kevin Gibson Ennis and his partner Michael Kennedy, a brother William "Bud" Ennis of Louisburg, Kansas, a sister, Joanne Ennis Bourquin of La Quinta, California, two grandchildren, Patrick Davies and Kathryn Davies, three great grandchildren, Dylan, Brian and Sarah Davies, and many cousins and extended family members. Services will be held at All Saints Church, 132 N. Euclid Avenue, Pasadena, on Saturday, June 6, 2009 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Lyman's name to All Saints Episcopal Church in Pasadena or to the Regas Institute (an organization promoting interfaith peace education, dialogue and collaboration), 595 E.
