Lawrence (Larry) Lee Wylie Jr. (80) of Clayton, Georgia passed after a long struggle with COPD on Friday, September 2, 2011. He was born in Cisco, Texas and was the son of Lawrence Lee Wylie and Aubrey Forrest Wylie of Phillips, Texas. He was a member of Timpson Presbyterian Church in Clayton, Georgia.
He received his Bachelors degree from Texas Western University in El Paso and was a member of the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. He earned his Masters degree in education from the University of Houston. He had qualified for his Doctorate degree from the University of Colorado.
He was a member of the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He taught elementary school for seven years in Texas and for 31 years in Boulder, Colorado. As a member of B.P.O. E. (Elks) Lodge 566 in Boulder, Colorado he was honored as Elk of the month twice.
In his humorous "Andy Griffith" accented calls, Larry was happiest when he taught and called square dances for almost four decades in the Boulder/ Denver area and throughout the southwest and plains states. Larry spent 17 summers in Central City Colorado where he created and eight college students performed exhibition square dances as they opened and closed each Central City Opera performance.
Larry and his wife Gerry loved to travel and visited Europe, Canada, and Mexico. Their preferred way to travel was by cruise ship where they enjoyed the amenities and the many exotic locations.
Larry is survived by his wife, of 56 years, Geraldine (Gerry) of Clayton, Georgia, their son, Nick, of Rabun Gap and Anderson, SC, daughter in law, Holly, granddaughter Bonnie and husband Omar Bravo, grandsons Andrew and Tyler, and brother Forrest Wylie of Glendale, California.
The family will welcome friends and family on Wednesday, September 7th from 5-7 pm at the Rabun Gap Nacoochee School Alumni Center on Wolfork Drive.
