M.A. CROSS, SUFFOLK CIVIC AND BUSINESS LEADER, DIES
Suffolk - Marion Austin Cross, 80, widely-known Suffolk businessman and civic
leader, died Monday at 7:40 a.m. at Obici Memorial Hospital after an illness of
several months.
Mr. Cross a native of Sunbury, N.C. came to Suffolk in 1895 as a youth of 17
as a clerk in a grocery store on North Main Street. After a few months he became
a traveling salesman and in 1905 he and the late R.W. Baker established the
Nansemond Grocery Co., with which he has been identified ever since. First
general manager, he became president in 1928 after the death of Baker.
He had been a member of the board of the Farmers Bank of Nansemond since 1919
and was a former director of the Bank of Sunbury.
HELD CITY POSTS

board member from 1933 through 1939 and has been a member of the electoral board
since 1911, the year Suffolk became a city. He was chairman of the electoral
board during his later years.
In recent years he was perhaps best known in his capacity as president of
Louise Obici Memorial Hospital, having held that post ever since the hospital
corporation was formed by Amedeo Obici 1942.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Evelyn Hurff Cross; four sons, M.A. Cross,
Jr., Joseph M. Cross III and John Franklin Cross II of Suffolk and Wilbur R.
