HUNT
A William Hunt was buried at Bachelor's Point of Charles City County with this inscription:
Here Lyeth Interred ye Body of William Hunt, Senr. who departed this Life Novemebr ye 11th Ano Dmi 1676 Aged 77 Yeares.
This may have been the William Hunt who aided Nathaniel Bacon and whose property was confiscated after the rebellion failed. His wife was Judith Burton , the daughter of immigrants Richard Burtonand his wife Katherine Christian. The children of William and Judith were William, Mary (married Edwards, Griffin, Boddie), Judith (married Clarke, Parker) and Godfrey.
In 1701, a William Hunt (?-1714), secured a grant for 4342 acres of land on the Nottoway River. He was married to Tabitha Enloe (the daughter of Matthew Enloe and his wife Tabitha). His will and various other deeds name his children: Mary (Minge, Allen), George, John ,William. There may have been others.
Our family line probably descended from one of these three brothers: George, John, or William. A William Hunt was born in Surry County by 1683, married Sarah Wyche, and died before 1727. William and Sarah had a son Henry who moved the Granville County, NC and died in 1750.
Our line is most probably descended from James Hunt, Sr. (1703-?) of King William County, Virginia, married to Sarah (Whitlock ?). Their children included Ann, James, John, Samuel, Sarah, and William. [Our thanks to Kay Hancock for this list.] The Granville County will of a second James Hunt (1725-1795) establishes him as a brother of our William and identifies many family members. The relationship of our James to the William Hunts (above) has not been proven.
Our William Hunt (c. 1730-1786) of Granville County, NC left all his estate to his wife Rosa ______ (during her widowhood) and made bequests to his sons James, Samuel and William, and to his daughter Mary Hunt (1773-?) who was by that time the wife of Rowland Bryant .
