Henry, 9th Earl of Northumberland (1585-1632) was twenty-on e years of age when he succeeded in 1585. He soon afterward s joined the army in the Netherlands and took part in the f amous siege of Ostend. In 1588 he hired a ship and particip ated in the victory over the Spanish Armada. He used all hi s influence to support the claims of James I to the thron e of England, and was treated with great favour by that mon arch after his accession in 1603. Unfortunately, Northumber land had in 1594 appointed his cousin, Thomas Percy, to b e Constable of Alnwick Castle. His Commissioner and Auditor , and his family resided in the Castle. This man, a bigote d Catholic, was neither a faithful servant to his master no r a loyal subject to the King. Many complaints as to his un just, harsh and dishonest conduct were made to the Earl b y the tenants. In spite of these complaints the Earl contin ued to trust him, with disastrous results to himself. In 16 05 Thomas Percy was one of the principal conspirators in th e Gunpowder Plot, on the discovery of which he fled, but wa s hunted down and shot at Holbeach in Staffordshire. Suspic ion naturally fell upon the Earl who, although nothing coul d be proved against him, was confined in the Tower for seve nteen years and only released on payment of a heavy fine.
He was known as the "Wizard Earl" on account of his devotio n to the study of chemistry and astronomy. He was a man o f great ability and learning, a close friend of Raleigh an d other learned men, but his pride and ungovernable tempe r made him many enemies. He died in 1632 and was succeede d by his son Algernon.
The Earls of Northumberland had ceased to reside in Northum berland and the influence of the family in the north wane d until its revival in the eighteenth century.
