Profession : Comte-Electeur du Palatinat (1610-1623), Roi de Bohème (1619-1620).
The election in 1619 of Elector Friedrich V as King of Bohemia
precipitated the Thirty Years War, in which the Palatinate (Pfalz) was ravaged both by the imperial forces under Tilly and by the Protestant army under Mansfeld. The Upper Palatinate and the electoral vote were taken from Friedrich and transferred to Bavaria, but at the Peace of Westphalia in 1648 a new vote was created for Friedrich's successor, Karl I Ludwig, and the Rhenish lands, devastated in the war, were returned to his control. The Upper Palatinate remained a part of Bavaria. The Protestant diet of Bohemia deposed the Roman Catholic King Ferdinand (Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II) and chose Prince Friedrich V of Pfalz as King of Bohemia. Influenced by his minister Prince Christian of Anhalt, Friedrich accepted but did not receive the aid expected from his father-in-law, King James I of England, and from the Protestant Union against Ferdinand. After initial success, his supporters were routed at White Mountain in 1620. Friedrich thus lost Bohemia; from his short tenure came the derisive name, the Winter King. He was put under imperial ban and was stripped of all his remaining territories. The electorate was transferred to Maximilian I of Bavaria. These struggles were the first campaigns of the Thirty Years War. The Hanoverian kings of England were descended from Friedrich and his wife, Elizabeth, through their daughter Sophia, who was the mother of King George I of England.
