Charleston Four Corners -- Mr. George "Herbie" Montanye, 76, of Charleston Street, died Thursday, December 2, at St. Mary's Hospital following a brief illness.
Mr. Montanye was born December 29, 1927, in Oak Ridge, NY, a son of Earl J. and Aurelia (Gordon) Montanye, Sr. ; He had been a lifelong resident of the Charleston area. He attended the former Fultonville High School and later enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He was an airplane and engine mechanic, serving his country from 1946 until his honorable discharge in 1955 as a staff sergeant.
He retired from New York State DOT after 18 1/2 years, working out of the Canajoharie and Fultonville posts. He also worked at the Charleston "Dump" for many years as the onsite sanitary engineer; he was an avid hunter and was known for his treats for his children and dogs. He was a member of the Charleston Historical Society and a past member of the charleston Fire Department.
Survivors include his wife, June (Titus) Montanye, whom he married August 13, 1953; one daughter, Dawn M. Montanye and her fiance, Jimmy Booth of Flat Creek; and his brother and sister-in-law, Jigger and Donna Titus of Burtonville. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, December 7, at the Langan Funeral Home, 195 North Main Street, Central Bridge. Burial with military honors will follow in the Charleston Christian Cemetery, Charleston Four Corners. Reverend Brett Popp, Pastor of the Christian Church of Charleston Four Corners, will officiate. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday evening at the Langan Funeral Home.
